Battle of the Bands: Main Characters

MAIN CHARACTERS

ILLYANA SANCHEZ, 17

Unrefined at best, and abrasive at worst - she doesn’t hold back in her opinion nor temperament. Easy to anger and slow to forgive, her personality can be prickly, and impatient, and it can be a slow process for one to truly get to know her.

She likes to listen to metal music and play video games. She used to be inseparable from Nick Hart when they were kids but puberty and a difference of interests have whittled their relationship away to practically nothing but old memories. She has friends in the Thackery sisters, and until recently, Leona Hillenburg who had replaced Nick as her best friend in her teen years.

Illyana has a red Fender Stratocaster that her aunt gave to her, and taught herself to play. Her preferred music genre to play is metal rock n’ roll, though her sound is known to be muddled, and most assume that it’s her skill at playing. She only decided to start playing guitar to try and reconnect with her former best friend but when that didn’t work out she was determined to try and be better than him and is highly competitive when she sets her mind to it. She has a talent in writing music and lyrics and can be quite poetic.

Illyana has long black hair that she usually wears in two buns, and very expressive brown eyes framed in dark lashes. As for style, she wears classic tennis shoes and casual tanks or t-shirts with baggy shorts or jeans. She drives a beat-up red Jeep that used to be her father’s. Her family is on the poorer side and it’s kind of obvious but she doesn’t tolerate any negative judgments about it.

Illyana lives with her mother, who is pretty lax about Illyana’s comings and goings because she has a job of her own that claims her attention. Illyana’s father died shortly after she was born and she has an older brother in Uni who doesn’t visit that often. This lack of familial contact has driven Illyana to seek surrogates in others such as the Thackery family, and Nick’s late grandmother.

NICK HART, 18

All swagger and no substance, Nick Hart is cocky as hell with an inflated ego to boot, and despite all that he is still one of the most popular boys at school.

He loves to laugh, even at the expense of causing enough trouble to warrant punishment. A show-off by nature, he learned guitar mostly because he thought it would make girls like him more, and in the process has had some substantial skill with the instrument in the five years since he started.

His best friends are his cousin, Cypress Wellington, and Orion Loche whose band he plays in. Nick thinks Cypress can sometimes be too indifferent and is openly jealous that girls prefer his cousin to him, but acknowledges the talent in his friends. He is friendly overall but also sarcastic and a little too sharp with his humor which can end up hurting others who are more sensitive.

He is completely self-centered and usually will only do things that benefit him. Nick is tall for his age, has green-blue eyes, and has light brown hair that is long enough to reach his lower neck and a light dusting of freckles on his nose. He has two younger brothers named Shane and Kit who he gets along with fairly well but fights will break out every once in a while, usually due to one of Nick’s pranks and especially with Shane who is a Freshman in High School.

He grew up living with his family in his grandparent's home, which his mother inherited upon his grandmother’s recent passing. His father is a regional judge of law and his mother is the high school principal, so they are both pretty straight-laced and strict. They expect him to go to college and go into a respectable career though Nick likes to paint and wants to be an artist. Nick finds himself getting grounded a lot, especially by his father who he often gets into arguments with.

EVELYN JANE ORBINSON, 18

She is a cunning and ruthless young woman. She doesn't tolerate less than perfect which only adds to her arrogance. She is in a natural position of leverage due to being the current Mayor’s middle child and uses it to her advantage. Those not on her radar are usually ignored, and she doesn’t associate with those of low social standing at school.

She keeps her brother close and manipulates him to an extent by driving away his friends so she is the primary person that can influence him. The only exception is Franz Schoulsburg, who is not a threat to her plans in any way shape, or form, and who has good taste in music though she personally distastes  Franz’s lack of social importance.

She has slight attention-seeking issues due to being a middle child and is constantly treated like one of the region’s diplomats by her father, the Mayor, who is usually too busy to really talk to her about anything more than her grades. She uses her wiles to gain the upper hand in situations and has a big superiority complex.

Evelyn is a very clever, quick thinker and seems to effortlessly make things go the way she wants, a natural chess player of life. She has taken violin lessons since she was a small girl and is very good at it, and wants to show off this accomplishment in an arena that has never heard anything like it. She has short black hair and striking green eyes that are always calculating her surroundings.

ORION LOCHE, 17

Described as sensitive and passionate by friends and observers, Orion’s mind is always thinking of music. Lyrics, bass lines, piano chords, guitar riffs, and drum beats are always on his idle mind.

He was greatly influenced by his family of talented musicians. His own grandfather, deceased before Orion’s birth was a rock n’ roll legend. Orion has had ample opportunity and time to practice music in every capacity. It was no surprise to anyone when he formed his band with his childhood friends.

His family is significantly wealthy but Orion doesn’t flaunt it in any way. He’s not very talkative unless someone hits a note of interest and Orion keeps to his small circle of friends but is otherwise polite and pleasant company. He has had performance anxiety in front of large crowds of people but with Nick’s guidance has slowly been getting better.

He’s always seemed neutral when it comes to romance until recently, admitting to himself he does feel something more than platonic friendship for Cypress. However, Orion doesn’t want to act too much on his feelings and risk losing his band and his best friend.

Orion has brown hair that is usually spiked to the side, vivid green eyes, and a favorite black t-shirt and white scarf that he wears for days on end.

CYPRESS WELLINGTON, 17

A natural at drums, he impresses even Orion Loche with his skill. Cypress is not very engaged with others, which causes people to think he’s spacey or hard to approach. He has a strong passion for listening to music like his best friend and deeply cherishes that friendship.

Cypress is considered a very handsome boy at school, he has pretty green eyes, and medium-length black hair that has grown into his eyes, which he can also pull back into a small ponytail when it becomes bothersome.

His unusual name is a tradition of plant names in his family starting with his grandmother. He has one little brother named Cedar that he adores and is trying to teach him how to play drums. Both his parents are in demanding fields of research work and so with them being busy, Cypress has been the primary caregiver and friend to Cedar. Otherwise, he has a decent relationship with both his parents and they encourage him enough that he doesn't feel neglected.

Cypress works part-time at an instrument store in Memosa Bay. Recently, Orion’s feeling of attraction has started to put distance between them because he is confused about how to feel about it and thinks he’ll straight up lose his best friend if he makes the wrong move!

ALARIE THACKERY, 18

Cavalier to the point of laziness, she goes with the flow for the most part. Alarie doesn’t like to do things unless the outcome is worth the effort. She’s optimistic, and cheerful, but can be brash if the situation calls for it. She is a fierce friend. She has some jealousy issues concerning her younger sister, because everyone perceives Alanna as perfect but Alarie thinks she is kind of a nerd and could loosen up.

Alarie has a strong interest in fashion, loves the color purple, and loves having her hair in different styles. She has thick, wavy black hair, and brown eyes. She hasn’t played drums very long and only started because Illyana wanted to be in a band, but enjoys the activity because she gets to hit things.

She has a strong interest in fashion.

Her Mother is a journalist and her father is a police detective for the IKDP and can be very intimidating. She has an older brother at college named Antoine who she is close to and she is dating Antoine’s best friend, Rafael who attends college as well.

LEONA HILLENBURG, 16

She has the voice of a songbird and the range of an opera star. She’s good at singing and good enough that people have taken note.

However, Leona has ambition and isn’t above flaking out on prior commitments to meet her dream of being a professional singer. She is also a talented songwriter and has collaborated with Illyana on many songs for their band.

Leona is an only child of a dancer and an overprotective, stay-at-home father and lives in a townhouse in downtown Scandalica City. She is very trusting, to the point of naivety.

Leona has a romantic interest in Antoine Thackery, despite her father’s disapproval.  She can’t see him often because he is away at University and her father would kick him out if he showed up on their doorstep.

Leona has honey-brown eyes, and very curly, long, black hair. Her other interests besides singing are astronomy, and reality TV. Leona’s favorite music genre is Rhythm and Blues, a majority of the singers she admires come from that part of the industry.

ALANNA THACKERY, 15

Smart, well-spoken, polite, pretty, kind, friendly - Alanna seems to have it all but she seems to fly under the radar most of the time at school, being very humble and not drawing a lot of attention to herself. For some reason this summer, those qualities have gained the attention of various boys.

She is an avid reader and is pretty good at chess. She sings soprano in the school choir and is involved in a few after-school organizations including the science club. Alanna follows the rules and is a strong believer in justice.

Alanna likes her sister and wishes Alarie wasn’t so resentful of her natural abilities. Despite her very warm personality, Alanna lacks close personal friends and confidants. She is somewhat timid at talking about herself and opening up.

Currently, Alanna has a small crush on Reggie Orbinson, the Mayor’s son who was her former partner in chemistry class. She was very surprised when he showed interest in hanging with her outside of school and her reluctance to tell all makes her hold him at arm’s length.

Alanna usually dresses conservatively and wears her long black hair in a braid over her shoulder, she also favors the color purple.

REGINALD ORBINSON, 15

His taste and appreciation for the finer things in life have led some to consider Reggie pretentious. He is skilled at playing piano, mostly in classical and jazz genres.

He is the Mayor’s youngest child and only son and so is aware that he is expected to go into politics when older, and because of this he has run for class president and is on the debate team.

Reggie thinks too much before he speaks, and can come off a bit awkward but otherwise is clean-cut, wears glasses, and is considered somewhat of a catch at school, though mostly for status and not aesthetics. His sister easily manipulates him because he lacks confidence, and he is choosy about friends due to his past of being bullied and only has one he would consider close in Franz Schoulsberg.

Reggie considers himself a nice guy but can be off-putting when he is judgmental. He dislikes liars. He doesn’t take rejection well and he definitely has privilege because of his family name and is not using it to his advantage. He sees his sister’s scheming and is resigned that he cannot influence her and therefore does not try to stop her no matter how wicked she may seem to obtain her desires.

Reggie likes to discuss, art, history, and philosophy and admires and even is interested romantically in Alanna Thackery for being able to participate in these discussions, among her other qualities.

Reggie is pale and has blue eyes and short dark hair that he usually gels and combs back though sometimes he will let loose and allow it to stick out naturally.

FRANZ SCHOULSBURG, 17

Considered intimidating due to his height and long silences, many assume Franz is neurodivergent in some way but the reality is he just doesn’t like talking to people. Instead, he loves to read science fiction and is decent playing the stand-up bass, which is why he is allowed to be in Evelyn Jane’s ‘band.’

He lives with a twin sister who he has no patience for, and his mother who owns a bakery which he helps out with tending the register after school or on the weekends if not helping bake pies and other delicious treats.

He doesn’t know who his father is; his mother refuses to talk about it, and it’s been long enough that he’s stopped wondering.

Franz’s voice, when he does talk, sounds gravelly from disuse, but it’s also very deep and quiet. He has blond hair (usually messy), intense dark blue eyes, and a pale complexion with freckles. He has a default facial expression of indifference which leads others to correctly assume he doesn’t want anything to do with them.

The only person he considers a friend is Reggie Orbinson, but to any outsider, it seems an odd relationship because of Franz’s low rung on the social hierarchy.

Franz couldn't care less what people think about him.
